Guiding Principles

PSBC developed guiding principles to guide us to achieve the vision and goals of PSBC, PHSA, and the Maternity Services Strategy, support communication with our partners, and strengthen our team through implementing shared principles. These principles were created in consultation with PSBC staff and PSBC’s Community Advisory Committee and Indigenous Community Advisory Circle.

Guiding Principle 1

We take action to address all discrimination, including Indigenous specific racism, and health inequities through practicing cultural humility, listening and learning, and embracing diversity and multiple ways of knowing.

How we put this into action:

Integrate the 4 R’s of Cross Cultural Dialogue and 6 practice principles into our work at PSBC to support culturally safe, humble, trauma informed perinatal care
Integrate a gender inclusive approach into our work at PSBC.
Create resources such as Honouring Indigenous Women’s and Families’ Pregnancy Journeys practice resource

Guiding Principle 2

‎We support health-care providers and inform health leaders to deliver high quality, evidence based, equitable, and accessible perinatal and newborn care across the province through partnerships and innovation, and by building stronger teams and networks of care.

How we put this into action:

Develop evidence based tools for inter professional teams (e.g., Perinatal Newborn Health Hub)
Improve data assets (e.g., BC Perinatal Data Registry)
Create practice resources such as Safer Infant Sleep Practice Resource for Healthcare Providers
Develop strong partnerships with Indigenous organizations, leaders, and Elders

Guiding Principle 3

‎We aim to give voice to patients/clients and families through authentic engagement to improve health outcomes, strengthen health care design, improve patient experience, and strengthen accountability.
How we put this into action:
Engage with patients and clients through PSBC’s Community Advisory Committee and Indigenous Community Advisory Circle
Co-design prenatal education and other important initiatives at PSBC with patients/clients e.g., Parent resources evaluation – with patient participation
